Every December, Profiles in Photography conducts a portfolio contest for people to submit their own work. There’s no entry fee at all and submissions are through a form.
Please note that these details are subject to change.
THE FORM: We aren’t accepting submissions yet. Check back at 12 a.m. on 1 December 2017 for the link!
THE TIMEFRAME: 12 a.m. on 1 December 2017 until 12 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (that’s 9 a.m. Pacific Standard Time and 5 p.m. UTC) on 31 December 2017. No late submissions will be accepted after we take the form down!
THE SUBMISSION: Minimum of 10 images, maximum of 15. Instead of asking you to upload these images, there’s a space on the form for a link to a Dropbox folder. Dropbox is free and easy to use, and for this reason we won’t make any exceptions. Do not email it to us via the “share” function; get a link to the folder and paste it into that section on the form. This is our strictest rule and we reserve the right to reject any submission that doesn’t have a proper Dropbox link. We will try to let you know if the link doesn’t work, but we can’t make any guarantees. We’re more likely to catch it if you submit early, though…
THE CATEGORIES: Posed People (portraiture), Unposed People (street, documentary, etc.), Concert and Theatrical (plays, rock concerts, symphonies, mosh pits, operas, etc.), Buildings (architecture, urban landscape, etc.), Natural Things (landscape, nature, wildlife), and Unnatural Things (e.g. Eggleston-style found objects).
The contest form asks you to put yourself in one category. This is to encourage some degree of consistency, but if you’re still at a loss, you probably belong in one of the two “People” categories if more than half of your pictures have people as their main subject. We reserve the right to put you in a different category if we think your self-assessment is a mistake.
THE PROCESS: A board of jurors looks over all the entries in January and picks winners for each category. We’ll notify the six winners a few days before we officially announce the winners on this website.
THE PRIZES: The six finalists get profiled on our site! Even if you don’t win, you can also receive a personalized portfolio review from a juror if you ask for one on the entry form.
